Until 1990, the mobile network was largely based on this existing infrastructure. The regulatory environment has played a crucial role in shaping the sector. For instance, the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) was established in 2013, leading to increased competition and investment in the sector. However, under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the regulatory agenda of the IFT has been constrained, and there have been significant budget cuts to the ICT sector, which has impacted the development of infrastructure and internet access.
The mobile market is currently dominated by América Móvil, which led the market in 2022 and is expected to remain the main operator due to its strong presence in both prepaid and postpaid segments. Other key players include Movistar, AT&T Mexico, Megacable, Grupo Televisa, Total Play, and Sky Mexico. The adoption of 5G technology is also a significant development, with operators focusing on expanding their 5G networks to improve coverage and affordability of devices. Despite these advancements, challenges such as unequal access to the internet, particularly in schools, and the lack of a national digital strategy continue to hinder the sector's growth.
