Nextel Mexico was a mobile network operator that operated under the Nextel brand in Mexico. It was part of NII Holdings, a publicly traded company that also operated Nextel networks in other Latin American countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and Chile. The network used iDEN technology developed by Motorola, which offered a unique push-to-talk feature similar to a walkie-talkie, in addition to direct-dialed voice calls.
In 2015, AT&T acquired Nextel Mexico as part of its strategy to expand its presence in Mexico and improve mobile Internet speeds. The acquisition included spectrum licenses, network assets, retail stores, and approximately 3 million subscribers. This acquisition was significant as it supported AT&T's plans to create the first-ever North American Mobile Service area, covering over 400 million consumers and businesses in Mexico and the United States.
After the acquisition, AT&T integrated Nextel Mexico with Iusacell, another Mexican wireless provider it had acquired earlier, to create a single entity focused on enhancing mobile services in Mexico. The combined company aimed to provide better service and faster mobile Internet speeds to more locations throughout Mexico.
Today, the network is part of AT&T Mexico, which is the third-largest wireless carrier in Mexico, serving 13% of the Mexican wireless market with over 21.6 million subscribers as of December 2022. AT&T Mexico operates a 3G UMTS and 4G LTE network, with plans to expand to 5G NR using its 2.5 GHz spectrum.
