The first mobile phone call was made in 1990, marking the introduction of 1G cellular connectivity. In 1997, 2G mobile networks were deployed, enhancing voice call quality. Nine years later, in 2006, one of the operators launched 3G, allowing customers to use their mobile devices for internet browsing. The introduction of 4G in subsequent years provided mobile broadband, enabling better video streaming and increased data usage through applications like WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube.
In 2016, the European Commission published the "5G for Europe: An Action Plan," outlining the strategic deployment of 5G across the European Union. Malta, like other EU member states, has been working towards implementing 5G technology. The 700MHz band, previously used for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), is being repurposed for 5G networks. The 3.6GHz band is already allocated for mobile applications, and the 26GHz band is used for fixed links and satellite applications.
Currently, Malta is modernizing its 5G network to improve coverage and connectivity, particularly in remote areas. A company, Epic Communication, is upgrading over 300 sites with new technology to deploy 5G nationwide. This project is supported by a €20 million loan from the European Investment Bank, aiming to enhance remote working, economic development, and overall connectivity.
