Thailand's mobile network has undergone significant development since its inception. The first telegraph service was deployed in 1875, marking the beginning of modern telecommunications in the country. By the 1980s and 1990s, private mobile operators were granted concessions from state enterprises TOT and CAT, leading to the corporatization of these entities in 2002-2003. This transition allowed for the allocation of radio frequencies through independent regulators, such as the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

As of 2014, Thailand had 97.6 million mobile subscribers, with a penetration rate of 146% of the total population. The market is predominantly prepaid, with 84.8 million prepaid subscribers. The three major operators—Advanced Info Service (AIS), DTAC, and TrueMove H—dominate the market, holding over 99% of the market share. AIS has the largest market share, followed by DTAC and TrueMove H. AIS is known for its strong network coverage and fast data speeds, while DTAC excels in video streaming experience, and TrueMove H offers good 5G availability.

In recent years, the number of mobile subscribers has continued to grow, reaching 121.53 million in 2017 and 125.6 million in 2018. The NBTC has played a crucial role in managing the allocation of radio frequencies, including successful auctions in 2012 and 2015. The regulatory environment has been instrumental in shaping the development of Thailand's mobile network, ensuring fair competition and efficient spectrum management.
