Check device compatibilitySingapore's mobile network has experienced significant growth and development over the years. The country's mobile market has seen substantial growth, with over nine million phone subscriptions at its peak in 2022, driven by strong Internet usage and digitization. By March 2023, there were around 1.32 million 5G mobile subscriptions, with mobile operators offering faster speeds to support IoT, cloud gaming, and other future applications such as autonomous driving.
The existing 5G network covers more than 1,300 outdoor and 400 indoor and underground sites, enabling revolutionary applications. Standalone networks offer faster downloads and low latency, with Singapore's 5G network boasting an average download speed of 376.8 Mbps, making it one of the fastest in the world.
Historically, Singapore's mobile network development began with the introduction of mobile services in the early 1990s. By 1997, there were 2.55 million radios in use, and by 2002, the country had a significant number of mobile phone users. The mobile market continued to expand, with the number of mobile subscriptions increasing steadily over the years. Today, Singapore is considered an international telecommunications hub, with high-quality telecommunications infrastructure supporting its economic growth.
The country's focus on 5G goes beyond national coverage. Singapore aims to become a global research and development hub for mobile communications technologies. The government has allocated significant funds to support R&D, with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) providing access to testbeds for 5G solutions in various sectors such as smart estates, industry 4.0, urban mobility, and healthcare.
