Check device compatibilityPeru's mobile network has undergone significant development since the 1990s. Initially, the country experienced a state monopoly in telecommunications, with the government controlling the market through companies like Compañía peruana de teléfonos and Entel. The quality of service was basic, and having a telephone was considered a luxury.
In 1991, a new telecommunications law was enacted, allowing private investment and free market competition. This led to the creation of Osiptel in 1993, which regulated and supervised the market of public telecommunications services in Peru.
In 1994, Telefonica acquired the state companies CPT and Entel, aiming to bring high-quality connectivity to every city in Peru. This marked the beginning of a more competitive and efficient telecommunications sector. The pre-payment method was introduced in 1997, allowing customers to pay in advance for access to minutes of service.
Between 1998 and 2005, the telephone market opened, and the number of operating companies and services increased. This period saw the expansion of fixed internet and mobile telephone services, leading to a significant growth in the number of users. Competition encouraged companies to provide better services, and multiple brands began to operate in Peru.
In 2001, Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) entered the Peruvian market, becoming the third operator. By 2005, America Movil's Claro brand joined the market, further increasing competition and driving development and innovation in telecommunications.
In 2008, Claro became the first company in Peru to launch the 3G service on a GSM platform. By 2011, Viettel Group was awarded a concession, becoming the fourth mobile phone operator in Peru.
Today, the leaders in the Peruvian telecommunications market are Bitel, Claro, Entel, and Movistar. The increase in competition has led to improved services and network quality, with a focus on expanding coverage to rural areas through initiatives like Internet Para Todos (IPT).
