Myanmar's mobile network development has undergone significant changes over the years. Historically, the country had a monopoly on telecommunications with Myanma Post and Telecommunication (MPT) until 2013, when the government began to liberalize the market. This led to the entry of new service providers such as Ooredoo Myanmar and Telenor Myanmar in 2014. The introduction of these new operators resulted in reduced consumer prices and a rapid increase in the number of subscribers, as well as the expansion of the country's infrastructure. By 2015, Myanmar had a mobile phone penetration rate of 54.6%, a significant increase from less than 10% in 2012.

The construction of mobile towers has improved reception, with 4G access available in most towns. However, remote and sparsely populated areas, such as Chin State and Sagaing, still lack adequate coverage. The number of towers has increased from 3,000 in 2013 to 11,700 in 2018, with mobile phone services also available in some areas bordering China.

Despite these advancements, challenges persist, including issues related to governance and political stability. The transition to a more open and accessible telecommunications market has been marked by significant changes in user practices, with mobile phones becoming essential tools for communication, empowerment, and daily life. However, the digital divide remains a concern, particularly in rural areas where poverty and limited access to technology hinder universal access to the Internet.
