Mobile broadband usage has grown rapidly, with an increase from 74% in 2018 to 85% in 2021, slightly below the EU average of 87% in 2021. The expansion of 5G coverage has been particularly rapid, starting from 0% in 2020 to 33% in 2021 and reaching 90% by 2022, surpassing the EU average of 81% in 2022.
Historically, the development of Lithuania's mobile network began with the establishment of the independent Lithuanian State in 1918, where the development of the phone network was a key priority. By 1923, all major centers had phone connections. The country continued to modernize its telecommunications infrastructure, with significant advancements in the 1990s and early 2000s. In 2017, Lithuania ranked top 30 in the world by average mobile broadband speeds and top 20 by average fixed broadband speeds. The country has also invested in rural broadband access, with the Development of Rural Areas Broadband Network (RAIN) project aiming to provide fiber-optic broadband access to rural areas from 2005 to 2013.
