Omnitel Lithuania, now known as Telia LT, is a significant mobile network operator in Lithuania. Here are some key points about the company:

  • Founding and Acquisition: Founded in 1991 by Juozas Kazickas as Litcom, Omnitel was Lithuania's first private telecommunications company. In August 2004, Omnitel was acquired by TeliaSonera, which later became part of the Telia Company group.

  • Innovations: Omnitel was the first network operator in Lithuania to launch GSM services in 1995 and introduced packet data transfer technology GPRS in its network. It was also the first to start commercial 3G services in 2006 and later introduced 4G services in 2014, which became fully covered by 2015.

  • Service Expansion: In 2016, Omnitel began offering new joint services with Teo. In 2017, it was renamed to Telia LT. Telia LT has continued to expand its services, including the use of the 3500Mhz band for 5G trials and testing in 2018. By March 2022, it started deactivating the 3G network to improve the coverage and quality of the 4G network, and by November 2022, it had shut down the 3G network entirely to reuse the band for 4G capacity.

  • 5G Rollout: In September 2022, Telia LT turned on 5G on the 700Mhz (Band 28) and 3500Mhz (Band 78) frequencies. By June 2023, it achieved 99% coverage with Low Band 5G, making it the first operator to achieve this in the Baltics.

  • Frequency Bands: Omnitel (now Telia LT) uses 1 GSM band, 1 UMTS band, and 3 LTE bands.

Omnitel Lithuania, now operating under the name Telia LT, has been at the forefront of telecommunications innovation in Lithuania, continuously expanding its services to meet the evolving needs of its customers.

Frequency Bands

GSM

Name Interface Description
900 MHz (E-GSM) GSM

Omnitel Lithuania uses the 900 MHz (E-GSM) frequency band for GSM. The 900 MHz (E-GSM) band ranges from 880 MHz to 960 MHz.

UMTS

Name Interface Description
B1 (2100 MHz) UMTS

Omnitel Lithuania uses the UMTS B1 (2100 MHz) frequency band. This band is commonly deployed for UMTS services and is widely used globally. The deployment date for Omnitel Lithuania's use of this band is not specified in the available information.

LTE

Name Interface Description
B3 (1800 MHz +) LTE

Omnitel Lithuania uses LTE Band 3 (1800 MHz +) for its LTE services.

B7 (2600 MHz) LTE

Omnitel Lithuania uses LTE Band 7 (2600 MHz) for its LTE services.

B20 (800 MHz DD) LTE

Omnitel Lithuania uses LTE band B20 (800 MHz DD) for its LTE network deployments. This band is particularly known for its wide area coverage and deep penetration, making it suitable for regional and rural environments, as well as in-building coverage. It is also popular for IoT applications like eMTC (LTE Cat M1) and NB-IoT (LTE Cat NB1) due to its wide coverage characteristics. The 800 MHz band does not easily support Massive MIMO and beamforming technologies due to its large wavelength. It can be used as a single band or as part of a multi-band network, and it supports carrier aggregation with other bands to enhance bandwidth and performance.
