Italy's mobile network has undergone significant development over the years. In the early 1990s, Italy's first GSM system was introduced, utilizing switches supplied by FATME, a company that had been producing Ericsson products since the 1920s. This marked a major milestone in the country's transition to modern mobile telephony.

By the turn of the century, Italy had become one of Ericsson's largest European markets, driven by successful sales of mobile telephones. The introduction of the TACS mobile system in the late 1970s and the subsequent adoption of GSM technology further expanded mobile phone usage in the country.

In recent years, mobile data traffic has seen a substantial increase, with total global mobile data traffic reaching 588 exabytes in 2020, a 150-fold increase from 3.86 exabytes per year in 2010. Smartphones accounted for 95% of this mobile data traffic, with video content making up 66% of the data types. This growth has been driven by advancements in technology and the widespread adoption of mobile internet services, which began with the launch of the Nokia 9000 Communicator in 1996 and the i-mode service by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in 1999.
