Check device compatibilityHungary's mobile network has undergone significant development since its inception. The first mobile network in Hungary was introduced in the early 1990s, with the first commercial mobile phone service launched in 1992. Initially, the network was dominated by a single operator, Magyar Telekom, which later became the country's most successful telecommunications company and one of the first to launch commercial 5G services.
By 2012, Hungary had 11.6 million mobile lines, with a penetration rate of 117 lines per 100 people. The mobile network has continued to evolve, with the introduction of 4G and 5G technologies. As of 2023, Yettel, formerly known as Telenor Hungary, is considered the second-largest mobile phone operator, while DIGI’s Hungarian branch was acquired by 4iG in 2022. Additionally, Antenna Hungária, a subsidiary of 4iG, acquired a majority stake in Vodafone Hungary in 2023.
In terms of performance, Telekom has consistently provided excellent consistent quality and core consistent quality, winning awards for these metrics in Opensignal's mobile network experience reports. Yettel users experience the fastest download speeds, averaging 39.5 Mbps, significantly faster than Telekom and Vodafone. The mobile network experience in Hungary is characterized by high availability, with users spending more than 95% of their time connected to a 3G or better signal.
