Brunei Darussalam's mobile network has undergone significant development since its inception. The first mobile communication service was introduced in 1989 by Jabatan Telekom Brunei (JTB) using the Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS). This marked a significant shift from fixed-line telephones, enabling users to communicate on the move.

In 1995, Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) was introduced by Datastream Technology Sdn Bhd (DST), providing second-generation (2G) digital cellular networks. This was followed by the introduction of 3G services in 2005, which included features like video calls and mobile internet. The transition to 4G technology in 2014 further enhanced internet speeds and user experience for video streaming and smartphone applications.

On September 1, 2019, the network infrastructure of Brunei’s four telecommunications providers—Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru), Datastream Technology Sdn Bhd (DST), Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (Progresif), and Brunei International Gateway Sdn Bhd (BIG)—was consolidated under a single entity, Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN). This consolidation aimed to improve service quality and reliability.

The 2G services were phased out by June 1, 2021, with the spectrum reused for more advanced mobile services. UNN has continued to expand its nationwide network, enhancing speeds and connectivity, especially in remote areas. The ongoing Radio Access Network (RAN) and fibre network expansion project has significantly improved mobile services and fixed network services across the country.

In preparation for 5G technology, UNN has been modernizing its infrastructure to cater to higher connectivity, bandwidth, and quality. 5G is expected to provide higher data speeds and lower latency compared to 4G, enabling faster downloads and improved network reliability. This transformation aims to support the digital economy and enhance the overall customer experience for consumers and businesses in Brunei Darussalam.
