Saudi Arabia's mobile network has undergone significant development since the establishment of the Directorate of Post, Telephone and Telegraph (PTT) in 1926. The country's modern telecommunications sector began to take shape with the establishment of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. Initially, the network was limited, with less than 30 miles of paved roads and no modern transportation facilities.

In the 2000s, mobile phones became extremely popular, with over 5 million mobile phones in use by 2002. The network operates on the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), one of the leading digital cellular systems globally. The major provider in Saudi Arabia is the partially privatized Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC), one of the largest telecom services operators in the world. Another significant provider is Mobily, which also offers mobile phone services.

The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology oversees all modern communications technologies in the Kingdom. The Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) supervises the Internet sector, helping Saudi families own personal computers and access the Internet through initiatives like the Saudi Home Computing Initiative.

Today, Saudi Arabia has a comprehensive road network, including highways with impressively engineered tunnels and bridges. The country's telecommunications sector is growing rapidly, with facilities and services constantly being expanded to accommodate the Kingdom's growing market. Internet usage is also increasing, with nearly two-thirds of Saudis having Internet access by 2003. The Kingdom plans to launch six Saudi-built satellites for communication and observation by 2006, further enhancing its telecommunications capabilities.
