The Netherlands has a highly competitive mobile network environment, with several key players including KPN, Vodafone, and T-Mobile. KPN has been at the forefront of modernizing its mobile network since 2019, replacing network equipment at around 5,000 mobile sites to enhance 5G expansion and improve user experience through superior mobile internet speeds and low latency.

Historically, the Netherlands has seen significant development in mobile communications. In 2022, there were 20.74 million mobile phones in use, corresponding to an average of 1.2 mobile phones per person, which is slightly higher than the average in the United States. The country's mobile internet speeds have also improved, with a download speed of 130.61 Mbit/second and an upload speed of around 19 Mbit/second, placing the Netherlands 10th in the world for mobile internet speeds.

In terms of awards and performance, KPN has emerged as the top performer, winning 13 awards either outright or jointly, including the 5G Download Speed and Consistent Quality awards. Vodafone and T-Mobile also share significant accolades, with Vodafone and KPN jointly winning the Games Experience and 5G Games Experience awards, and T-Mobile winning the Upload Speed Experience award.

The development of 5G in the Netherlands has been hampered by regulatory issues, including the delay in making 3.5GHz spectrum available for commercial use. This has affected the country's ranking in 5G Download Speed, which is towards the back of the pack globally.

Overall, the Netherlands' mobile network has evolved significantly, with a strong focus on modernization and competition driving improvements in user experience and network performance.
