Check device compatibilityMacau's mobile network has undergone significant development over the years. Historically, GSM mobile phone networks were set to be decommissioned in July 2012, but the shutdown was postponed until 2019. This made Macau the first region in the world to phase out networks using the GSM standard. Currently, the primary mobile operators in Macau include CTM, 3 Macau, SmarTone MAC, and China Telecom. These operators offer a range of services including UMTS, LTE, and 5G networks, providing high-speed data services and mobile broadband access to the population.
The mobile broadband market has experienced fluctuations due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduction of a Cyber Security Law requiring prepaid SIM card registration. Despite these challenges, the mobile broadband market has shown resilience, with data traffic increasing between 2019 and 2021. Postpaid accounts, which are largely held by permanent residents, have continued to grow, driven by increased data usage during the pandemic.
Macau's mobile network is supported by modern communication facilities, including HF radiotelephone communication and satellite earth stations. The country's small population and market have led to a high mobile penetration rate, with a significant bounce back expected as travel restrictions ease and the economy recovers.
