Lebanon's mobile network has undergone significant development over the years. Here is a brief history of its evolution:

  • Early Development (1950s-1970s): Lebanon began investing in its telephone network in the 1950s, modernizing it with automatic dialing systems and expanding the network with new lines. The country also pioneered the Telex system in the Arab world and established its first satellite earth station in 1969.

  • Post-War Revamp (1990s): After the war, the telephone system was rebuilt and revamped. Investcom launched the first Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) in 1991, and Sodetel acquired a monopoly on switching within the network.

  • Mobile Internet and 3G/4G (2010s): In November 2011, Lebanon launched 3G services, followed by 4G services. By 2018, the number of mobile broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants was 56.8, with 4G users experiencing an average download connection speed of 25.96 Mbps.

  • 5G Trials and Deployment (2019): The first successful trial of a 5G network was conducted in 2018 as part of the “Digital Telecommunications Vision 2020.” Both Alfa and Touch companies have been testing and installing 5G networks, with Touch successfully deploying the first live mobile 5G site providing low latency and speeds of 1.4 Gb/s.

  • Challenges and Restrictions: Despite these advancements, there have been challenges. For example, mobile Internet was shut down in the border town of Arsal from August 2014 to September 2017 due to security concerns. Additionally, during the 2019 protests, internet speeds were reduced due to network congestion.

Overall, Lebanon's mobile network has seen substantial growth and technological advancements, but it has also faced challenges related to security and network congestion.
