Check device compatibilityIndonesia has experienced significant growth in its mobile network infrastructure over the years. The country's mobile cellular subscriptions have increased dramatically, with over 355 million subscriptions as of 2024, making it the third largest cellular market globally, behind India and China. This growth has been driven by the expansion of 4G and 5G networks, with an estimated 258 million 4G subscribers and 79 million 3G subscribers.
Historically, mobile phone ownership in Indonesia has seen rapid expansion. By 2010, mobile phone ownership had increased from 20% to 54% of the population, with over 70% of Indonesians aged 10-19 years old owning a mobile phone. This trend reflects broader regional patterns, where internet users in Asia, including Indonesia, have increasingly turned to mobile devices for connectivity and online activities such as shopping and social media usage.
The telecommunications sector in Indonesia is dominated by four major network operators: Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo, XL Axiata, and Smartfren. Telkomsel has maintained a strong leadership position in the market, particularly in the fixed voice segment. The sector is undergoing a transformation driven by investments in 4G/5G networks and the expansion of digital infrastructure, including the Palapa Ring broadband infrastructure project and the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) Tower initiative.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in rural and remote areas where connectivity is limited. Approximately 5,000 villages still lack adequate mobile coverage, and over 80% of households do not have fixed broadband access. Efforts to improve connectivity and digital inclusivity are ongoing, with initiatives aimed at expanding mobile and fixed access networks to reach more of the population.
