Gibraltar's mobile network has undergone significant development since its introduction. The first mobile phones were introduced in Gibraltar using a GSM900 network by Gibtelecom, which later became Gibtelecom. This was followed by the installation of a new GPRS network, allowing for faster and permanent connectivity, as well as high-speed picture and video messaging for users of the new range of multi-purpose handsets.

In 2002, Gibtelecom introduced ADSL services, which quickly gained popularity with several thousand users by 2005. Around the same time, CTS Gibraltar Limited launched a WiMax service, competing against the established ADSL providers. However, CTS ceased providing 3G services in early 2013 due to significant debts.

Shine Mobile, which launched in September 2013, obtained a licence for broadband services but closed down in May 2016, citing infrastructure upgrades as the reason. Despite this, Gibtelecom continues to operate 3G and 4G networks, providing a range of telecommunication services to the residents and visitors of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar's mobile network has evolved from basic GSM services to more advanced technologies like GPRS and ADSL, reflecting the country's growing reliance on digital communication. The current state of the network, managed by Gibtelecom, ensures that residents and visitors have access to various telecommunication services, including high-speed internet and mobile connectivity.
