The Czech Republic has a well-developed mobile network infrastructure, with significant advancements over the years. The country transitioned from an analogue NMT network to a digital GSM system in July 1996, which brought lower prices and smaller, more affordable mobile phones. This transition marked a significant milestone, as it introduced mobile phone coverage to the entire country. Initially, mobile services were expensive and limited, with basic contracts costing around 695 CZK per month with no free minutes and activation fees ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 CZK.

In the early days, mobile phones were bulky and expensive, with the first official call made during a live television broadcast in 1991 using a suitcase-like Dancall 7025. The introduction of digital GSM networks in the late 1990s led to the availability of smaller, more affordable phones like the EuroTel XL 110 and the Motorola StarTac, which was a precursor to the clamshell design.

Today, the country is served by major telecommunications operators such as O2 Czech Republic, T-Mobile, Vodafone, and Nordic Telecom. These operators offer a range of mobile data plans using technologies like LTE, GPRS, and EDGE, with some areas already transitioning to 5G networks. The mobile internet penetration has grown significantly, with over 2.2 million Czechs accessing the internet via mobile phones, and mobile broadband subscriptions reaching 4.5 million by 2012.
