Check device compatibilityColombia's mobile network development began in the late twentieth century, transitioning from an expensive service reserved for the economic elite to a widespread practice among citizens. By 2017, 73.2% of the population aged 5 and over owned a cell phone, with 86.3% using one. The country now manages 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, catering to various user needs.
Mobile network operators like Avantel, ETB, Móvil Éxito, Movistar, Tigo, and Virgin Mobile offer different types of coverage, with some focusing on large cities and others having limited coverage in rural areas. Despite these limitations, mobile phones are widely available and accessible, with plans ranging from very affordable to more expensive options that include cellular telephony and data access.
The National Optic Fiber Project has improved services by benefiting 788 municipalities and 2,000 public institutions, totaling 4,602,090 beneficiaries. However, measures such as smartphone and mobile broadband adoption, as well as mobile internet usage, still lag in Colombia.
