Check device compatibilityThe Bahamas has a well-developed mobile network infrastructure, with significant advancements over the years. The country's mobile network history began with the introduction of wireless telegraphy in Bimini in 1920 and the first telephone service to the United States from the Bahamas in 1933. After World War II, the Telecommunications Department of The Bahamas started to make steady progress in its development, installing frequency shifters in 1946 and an automatic time of day announcer in Nassau in 1951.
In 1966, the Government of The Bahamas incorporated the Telecommunications Department as the Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation (Batelco), a quasi-governmental corporation. This marked a significant milestone in the country's telecommunications history. Direct distance dialing was introduced for Batelco operators in 1971, and a submarine cable was installed from West Palm Beach to Eight Mile Rock in 1972.
The Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation (Batelco) continued to evolve, with the introduction of cellular telephone service in the late 1980s. In 2011, the Government of The Bahamas privatized Batelco, transferring 51% of the public corporation to Cable & Wireless Communications for $210 million. This move introduced new payment methods, eliminated long-distance charges between islands for calls originating from cell phones, and initiated a multimillion-dollar network overhaul to shift data traffic from 2.5G speed to 4G.
Today, the Bahamas boasts a robust mobile network infrastructure, with services including prepaid and postpaid plans, roaming, handsets, mobile to mobile top-ups, and international texting. The country's mobile network providers have invested heavily in upgrading their infrastructure, including the expansion of broadband internet access and the deployment of 4G and 5G networks. This has enhanced connectivity and communication capabilities, positioning the Bahamas as a modern and digitally connected nation.
