Check device compatibilityArgentina's mobile network has undergone significant development since its inception. Initially, the network was primarily developed by ITT, and following nationalization in 1948, the ENTel State enterprise expanded access to phone service, making it the widest in Latin America. After ENTel's privatization in 1990, a new numbering plan was implemented, and the number of lines grew to cover most households. However, a sizable minority of households still lack landline telephone service.
The mobile telephone market experienced impressive growth starting from the economic recovery in 2003. By January 2010, there were 9.2 million landlines, 50 million cellular phones, and 143,000 public phones in the country. Mobile phone lines increased by 68.8% in 2005, with 11 million mobile phones sold that year, servicing three-quarters of the population over 14 years old. By 2011, mobile subscriptions had reached 50 million, with a significant portion of users being children under 14, raising concerns and debates in Argentine society.
As of 2022, Argentina had 60.24 million mobile phones, corresponding to an average of 1.3 mobile phones per person. The monthly cost for a mobile phone contract averaged $5.20, which is significantly lower than in the United States, where the cost was around $44.10. This cost includes 140 telephony minutes, 70 text messages, and a data transfer of 2 GBytes, which is a high consumption rate in a worldwide comparison.
