Korek Telecom is an Iraqi Kurdish mobile phone operator based in Erbil, Kurdistan Region. Here are some key points about the company:
Ownership and Partnerships: In March 2011, France Télécom (now Orange S.A.) acquired a 20% indirect stake in Korek Telecom. On January 1, 2015, Korek launched 3G services in Iraq after winning one of the three 3G licenses awarded by the Government of Iraq. Additionally, on December 16, 2015, Korek became the first operator in Iraq to launch Free Basics in partnership with Internet.org and Facebook.
Corruption Scandal: In March 2023, Korek Telecom and its founder, Sirwan Barzani, were found guilty of fraud and corruption by the Paris-based International Court of Arbitration. The court awarded $1.65 billion in damages to Iraq Telecom Limited, a joint venture of Kuwaiti company Agility and French Orange Group.
Mobile Network Performance: According to Opensignal's January 2023 report, Asiacell remains the top performer in Iraq's mobile network experience, winning several awards including Download Speed Experience, Upload Speed Experience, and Video Experience. Korek Telecom, on the other hand, shared some awards with other operators but did not win any outright. Korek's users observed average download speeds of 9.4 Mbps and upload speeds of 3.1 Mbps, which were significantly lower than Asiacell's scores.
Coverage and Services: Korek Telecom offers various services such as the Beep Service, Friends & Family, and MYKOREK, which allow users to make calls, create groups for discounted calls, and manage their lines through a personalized mobile experience. The company also provides global services with an Iraqi twist.
Recent Developments: As of November 2023, Korek Telecom subscribers were unable to make or receive calls and messages from other domestic and international mobile phone operators due to a decision by the Iraqi government.
