Check device compatibilityTurkmenistan's mobile network has undergone significant development over the years, though it remains one of the least developed in the region. The country's first mobile operator, BCTI, was granted a 10-year exclusive license in 1994. However, due to the lack of competition and limited investment in rural areas, the service remained expensive and accessible to only a small percentage of the population.
In 2004, BCTI's exclusive license expired, and the Russian mobile phone operator MTS acquired BCTI. This acquisition marked a significant improvement in mobile phone services, with the number of subscribers increasing rapidly. The state-owned communication company TurkmenTelekom also opened a new subsidiary, Altyn Asyr, which further expanded mobile coverage.
By 2013, Altyn Asyr had launched a 4G network based on LTE, offering higher speeds and more reliable services. As of November 2023, there were over 4.4 million mobile phone subscribers, with a penetration rate of 88.8% of the population. Altyn Asyr was the first operator to introduce eSIM technology in November 2023, providing users with more flexible and convenient options for mobile services.
