Check device compatibilityNorway's mobile network is well-developed, with universal coverage in urban areas and generally good coverage in rural regions. The country has two main networks: Telenor and Telia. Both providers offer considerable speed and coverage across the country, with some rural valleys experiencing occasional poor coverage.
Historically, Norway's mobile network has evolved significantly. The telegraph service was introduced in the 1850s, and the telephone service began to develop in the 1880s. The first mobile phone service, Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT), was launched in the 1980s, making Norway one of the first countries to adopt this technology. By the 1990s, Norway had the highest rate of mobile communications penetration in the world and became one of the first countries with a fully digitalized telecommunications network. Telenor, which has been providing telecommunications in Norway since 1855, has played a pivotal role in this development, including the introduction of GSM (2G) in 1993 and the launch of 4G services in 2012.
