The Northern Mariana Islands have experienced significant developments in their mobile network infrastructure. Historically, the islands have faced challenges in deploying and maintaining reliable mobile networks due to their remote location and limited resources. However, recent advancements have improved connectivity.

In 2017, DOCOMO Pacific introduced the Atisa submarine cable, which significantly enhanced the islands' connectivity by linking them to Guam. This cable, with a total design capacity of 4.8Tbps, has enabled DOCOMO Pacific to offer 100Mbps broadband speeds and LTE connectivity to all three main islands, surpassing its competitor IT&E in the process.

Despite these improvements, the islands still face challenges in achieving digital equity. The CNMI Broadband Policy & Development Office has released a draft Digital Equity Plan to address these issues. The plan aims to ensure fair and inclusive access to digital resources and technologies for all residents, recognizing the importance of broadband technology and resources in the rapidly changing digital landscape.

Currently, the Northern Mariana Islands have a total of 20,474 mobile cellular subscriptions, with a subscription rate of 28 per 100 inhabitants as of 2004. The country code for the Northern Mariana Islands is 1-670, and there are landing points for the Atisa and Mariana-Guam submarine cables, which connect the islands to Guam.
