Moldova's mobile network is characterized by a mix of GSM and CDMA carriers. The first GSM carrier, Orange Moldova, launched its network in October 1998 under the brand of Voxtel. This was followed by TeliaSonera entering the market in April 2000 with its own network under the brand of Moldcell. Moldtelecom launched its own GSM network in March 2007 under the brand of Unité. Another carrier, Eventis, entered the market in December 2007 but declared bankruptcy and shut down its operations in February 2010.

The mobile telephone market in Moldova is divided between these carriers, with Orange Moldova and Moldcell being the major GSM carriers, and Unité being a major CDMA carrier. The Transnistrian region has its own major ISP, Interdnestrcom, which operates independently due to the restrictions imposed by the Transnistrian government following the War of Transnistria in the early 1990s.

Despite the presence of multiple carriers, the mobile market in Moldova is plagued by high prices and poor service quality. Mobile Internet access is also limited by high prices and low monthly caps, contrasting sharply with the well-developed and cheap wired Internet access available in the country. The number of mobile subscriptions has grown significantly, with over 4 million subscriptions as of 2005, exceeding 100% penetration in the estimated population without Transnistria.
