The country's mobile network development began with the introduction of GSM technology, which covered around 12% of the population. Over time, the coverage expanded to include 3G, which reached approximately 52% of the population, and later LTE, which covered around 35% of the population. Currently, the majority of the population, around 98.50%, has access to mobile networks, with 5G coverage starting to emerge, albeit at a very low percentage.
Major mobile operators such as Unitel, Lao Telecom, and ETL have invested heavily in improving coverage, particularly in urban areas and popular tourist destinations. Unitel has the widest 4G/LTE and 3G coverage, reaching most major population centers and many towns along highways. Lao Telecom's network spans most cities and towns nationwide but has less robust coverage in remote rural communities. ETL focuses on Southern Laos, with widespread 4G coverage in major urban areas but limited coverage beyond these regions.
The expansion of mobile networks has been driven by the need to improve connectivity, especially in rural areas. Efforts to upgrade current GSM and 3G cell sites to include LTE coverage, along with the construction of additional cell sites in rural areas, have been ongoing. These initiatives aim to increase mobile broadband coverage and access, particularly in areas where it is currently limited.
In recent years, there has been a focus on improving internet speeds and coverage. Median mobile internet connection speeds have increased to around 29.40 Mbps, while median fixed internet connection speeds have reached approximately 32.97 Mbps. These improvements have enhanced the overall digital experience for both residents and tourists in Laos.
