As of 2024, Iceland's telecom infrastructure is fully digitized and mostly fibre-based, with 93% of households having full-fibre availability. The NMT (1G) network was shut down in 2010.
Historically, Iceland's mobile network development began with the introduction of mobile services in the early 1990s. The first mobile network operator, SÃminn, was established in 1990. Vodafone and Nova entered the market later, offering competitive prepaid plans and extensive coverage. These operators have continuously upgraded their services, introducing 4G in 2013 and 5G in 2020 and 2021, respectively. This development has ensured that Icelanders have access to reliable and advanced mobile communication services.
