Check device compatibilityHonduras's mobile network has been dominated by oligopolies, primarily controlled by two transnational companies: Tigo (Millicom) and Claro (AméricaMóvil). This concentration has not necessarily improved access and use of mobile technology among Honduran citizens. Despite this, mobile penetration is high, with 87.57 percent of the population using mobile phones.
Historically, the mobile market in Honduras has grown rapidly. By 2017, there were over 8 million mobile connections, with almost 30 percent of these being from smartphones. The deployment of 4G networks has also been significant, with a notable increase from 88,000 connections in 2015 to 1.4 million in 2020.
However, the mobile ecosystem faces challenges, particularly in rural areas where coverage is limited. Indigenous territories, such as the Mosquitia Hondureña, often lack access to mobile technology. The regulatory environment and state policies have been criticized for negatively affecting the mobile ecosystem, despite significant contributions to the national GDP through taxes and investments.
Efforts to improve connectivity include initiatives like the first community Internet network installed in an indigenous Lenca population in 2018, which has directly connected over 3,000 families to the internet and Wi-Fi. Despite these efforts, there are still areas with weak or no cell phone coverage, particularly in rural and indigenous communities.
