Cyprus has a well-developed mobile network infrastructure, with a high level of coverage and advanced services. The country's mobile network has evolved significantly over the years, driven by strategic investments and technological advancements.

Brief History of Mobile Network Development

  • Early Years: The mobile network in Cyprus began to take shape with the establishment of Areeba in 2003. Areeba was later acquired by MTN in 2007 and then by Monaco Telecom in 2018, rebranding as Epic Cyprus (Epic).
  • Technological Advancements: Epic has been at the forefront of mobile network development in Cyprus. It was the first to introduce 3G, 3.5G, 4G, and VoLTE (Voice over LTE) services in the country. In 2020, Epic was ranked as the "Best Mobile Network in Test" by umlaut and the "Fastest Mobile Network" by Ookla.
  • 5G Rollout: In 2020, Epic received a license from the Cyprus government to build a 5G network, which was officially launched in July 2023.

Current State

  • Coverage: The mobile network in Cyprus covers almost 100% of the population, with high-speed broadband available to around 90% of households.
  • Speed and Performance: Cyprus has seen significant improvements in mobile speed, ranking first in the world in mobile speed growth in 2021. The average mobile speed reached 63.18 Mbps, a 155% increase since the beginning of the pandemic.
  • Private Operators: Besides Epic, other private operators like Cablenet, OTEnet Telecom, Omega Telecom, and PrimeTel have also emerged, contributing to the country's robust mobile network infrastructure.

Future Plans

  • European Gigabit Society: Cyprus aims to become part of the European gigabit society by 2025, focusing on advanced next-generation services that will revolutionize daily life, including smart cities and homes.
  • 5G and Beyond: The rollout of 5G networks is expected to further enhance data transmission rates, data volume, and network delay, while also improving geographical coverage and battery life of connected devices.

Cyprus's mobile network has evolved into a comprehensive and high-performance infrastructure, driven by both public and private sector investments.
