The British Virgin Islands have a well-developed mobile network infrastructure. The country's mobile network history began with Cable & Wireless (Caribbean) holding a statutory monopoly on telephone and other electronic communications services until 2006. However, a local company called CCT Boatphone, which initially provided radio boatphones to tourists, expanded into cellular telecommunications and challenged the monopoly. This led to a split of the monopolies, with Cable & Wireless retaining control over fixed-line and internet services, while CCT Boatphone maintained a de facto monopoly over cellular telephones.

In 2007, the government abolished the existing monopolies, issuing three cellular telephone service provider licenses. CCT Boatphone obtained one license, and bmobile, the cellular arm of Cable & Wireless, obtained a second. The third license was granted to BVI Cable TV, despite its limited infrastructure and lack of cellular service capabilities. Digicel, a major regional competitor, was rejected for a license, leading to court proceedings against the regulator.

Today, the mobile network in the British Virgin Islands is supported by a robust infrastructure, providing high-speed internet and communication services to residents and visitors. The network has evolved significantly since the early days of radio boatphones, now offering a wide range of services and applications, including satellite technology solutions that enhance connectivity and business capabilities.
