Check device compatibilityBelize's mobile network is primarily served by two major operators: Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) and SpeedNet Communications, operating under the brand "Smart." BTL, which is government-owned, has a significant market share and has invested in expanding its infrastructure and services. It operates under the Digi brand and offers mobile, landline, and internet services. Smart, the primary competitor to BTL, provides mobile and internet services and has become an alternative to Digi by transitioning from CDMA to 3G on the 850 MHz band.
Historically, telecommunications in Belize dates back to 1902 with the establishment of a manual wireline connecting Belize City with Consejo Village. Cable & Wireless, a British firm, introduced the first telephone system in Belize with international radio-telephone links. The Belize Telecommunications Authority (BTA) was established to operate, maintain, and administer national telecommunications services. In 2007, BTL was formed through the merger of BTA and Cable & Wireless, and it was granted a 15-year exclusive license to operate telecommunications services in Belize. BTL has since invested heavily in GSM cellular infrastructure and launched 4G LTE Advanced services in 2016.
As of 2024, the 4G network coverage in Belize is estimated to be around 86.92%. The country has seen significant growth in telecommunications density and a decline in tariffs, with nearly 95% of adults having access to cellular mobile devices. Despite these advancements, rural areas still face challenges with limited coverage and rely on satellite connections, which are often expensive and slower.
