Tcell Tajikistan is the largest mobile phone operator in Tajikistan, with over 3.3 million subscribers as of 2014. The company provides a wide range of mobile services, including GSM, UMTS, HSPA, and LTE technologies. Tcell offers coverage to 94% of the population through its 2G network and about 45% through its 3G network. In 2006, Tcell became one of the first mobile telecommunication companies in Central Asia to launch 3G services, providing high-speed mobile internet connections. By April 2014, Tcell had also introduced 4G/LTE services, further enhancing its network capabilities.

Tcell's network expansion and modernization efforts have been supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group. In 2014, IFC provided a $30 million loan to help Tcell upgrade its network, increase coverage, and improve connectivity, especially in remote areas. This investment aimed to make mobile services more accessible and affordable for low-income populations, thereby contributing to Tajikistan's economic growth.

Additionally, Tcell has been a pioneer in customer service, offering 24-hour support via a hotline and maintaining modern service centers in major cities like Dushanbe, Khujand, Kurgan-Tube, and Khorog. The company also operates regional offices to cater to customers in remote areas.

In August 2020, Tcell switched on its first 5G base stations in central Dushanbe, marking a significant step in its network modernization and expansion into the latest 5G technology.

Frequency Bands

GSM

Name Interface Description
900 MHz (E-GSM) GSM

Tcell Tajikistan uses the GSM 900 MHz (E-GSM) frequency band.

1800 MHz (DCS) GSM

Tcell Tajikistan uses the GSM 1800 MHz (DCS) frequency band. This band operates within the 1.8 GHz frequency range, offering reduced signal interference and greater channel availability compared to the more crowded 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. The frequency ranges for GSM 1800 are:

  • Uplink: 1710–1785 MHz
  • Downlink: 1805–1880 MHz

This band provides services such as voice communication, text messaging (SMS), and basic data communications, similar to GSM. It is known for its efficient use of the 1.8 GHz band through modulation schemes like Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS).

UMTS

Name Interface Description
B1 (2100 MHz) UMTS

Tcell Tajikistan uses the UMTS B1 (2100 MHz) frequency band. This band is widely used for 3G services and is supported by various networks and devices globally. It is particularly notable for its extensive use in many countries, including Tajikistan, where it is utilized by Tcell for its mobile network services.

LTE

Name Interface Description
B20 (800 MHz DD) LTE

Tcell Tajikistan uses the LTE B20 (800 MHz DD) frequency band. This band is excellent for wide area coverage in regional and rural environments, as well as in-building coverage. It has been instrumental in enabling nationwide or near-national coverage for Tcell, allowing the operator to meet market, investor, or regulatory coverage requirements quickly. The band's deep penetration and wide coverage characteristics make it suitable for LTE-M and NB-IoT applications. The deployment of this band has significantly enhanced Tcell's mobile broadband penetration and speed, particularly in metropolitan areas.
