Etisalat Sri Lanka, previously known as Celltell and later Tigo, is a mobile telecommunications network in Sri Lanka. Here are some key points about the network:
History: The network was founded on June 18, 1989, as Celltel, making it the first cellular network in Sri Lanka and the 36th in the world. It was later rebranded as Tigo in January 2007 by Millicom International Cellular. In February 2010, Etisalat acquired Tigo Sri Lanka and rebranded it as Etisalat Lanka.
Acquisition and Merger: In April 2018, CK Hutchison Holdings and Etisalat Group entered into a definitive agreement to merge their mobile telecommunications businesses in Sri Lanka. Upon completion, CK Hutchison completed the acquisition of Etisalat Lanka on November 30, 2018.
Technology: Etisalat Lanka operates a GSM/EDGE supported network using 900 / 1800 MHz. The company launched HSPA+ services over 2100 MHz on May 5, 2011, becoming the first LTE-ready mobile network in the country. It also launched Dual Carrier HSPA+ services on August 15, 2012, becoming the first operator in South Asia to do so.
Customer Base: As of February 2012, Etisalat had over 4.2 million customers.
Innovations: Etisalat Lanka was recognized for its inclusive policy and several innovations, including the development of Sri Lanka's first independent third-party app store, AppZone, and the first eBook store, Book Hub.
