Syria's mobile network has undergone significant development, despite facing numerous challenges due to the ongoing civil war and infrastructure damage. Historically, the country's mobile network was slowly liberalizing, with the government awarding licenses and launching new services in the internet service provision market by 2010. This move reflected the government's shift towards market liberalization, as promised to the European Union.

The mobile operators in Syria are Syriatel, MTN Syria, and Wafa. These operators provide mobile phone coverage to most parts of the country, with access to 96% of the population. However, the quality of calls can vary, with international calls often failing or being less clear over the mobile network compared to landlines.

In recent years, the Syrian Ministry of Communications has maintained control over the internet, with the state-owned operator, Syrian Telecom (STE), providing all fixed-line communications. The country code for Syria is +963, and as of 2021, there were 16.99 million mobile phones in use.

The mobile internet in Syria has shown some improvement, with a download speed of 13.87 Mbit/second, ranking 132nd globally. However, upload speeds are slower, at around 3 Mbit/second, placing Syria 141st globally. Despite these advancements, the mobile network remains heavily impacted by the conflict, with frequent blackouts and power outages affecting service reliability.

In some regions, particularly near the northern border, citizens rely on Turkish mobile internet due to the damage to Syria's telecommunications infrastructure. Turkish companies like Turkcell and Vodafone have established a strong presence in these areas, offering 4.5G internet coverage. Additionally, the Kurdish-held areas have prohibited the use of Turkish internet lines since April 2019.

Overall, Syria's mobile network has made strides in recent years, but it continues to face significant challenges due to the ongoing conflict and infrastructure damage.
