Malawi's mobile network development has been marked by significant growth and challenges. The first cellular towers were built in the mid-1990s, primarily focusing on major cities like Lilongwe and Blantyre. By 2004, 57% of the country's land area had access to cell coverage, which increased to 86% by 2008. Despite this expansion, network quality varied, with dropped call rates reaching up to 30% in some months, although the median monthly rate was below 3% in most months.

The mobile network is dominated by two major operators, Airtel Malawi and Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM), which provide the majority of voice and data services. These operators have invested in LTE technologies to improve data services. However, the lack of market competition and limited international internet bandwidth have resulted in high prices for telecom services, leading to customer complaints and subsequent regulatory interventions to reduce costs.

Mobile penetration remains low compared to regional averages, offering considerable opportunities for growth, especially in the mobile broadband sector. The government has taken steps to reduce data bundle costs, and there is a possibility of new operators entering the market by the end of 2022.
