Check device compatibilityThe Gambia's mobile network is dominated by the state-owned Gamtel, which retains a monopoly on fixed-line telephony services. However, the mobile market is competitive with four major operators: Africell, Comium, QCell, and Gamcel. Africell is the market leader with approximately 65% market share, followed closely by Comium and QCell. Gamcel, the mobile unit of Gamtel, holds the smallest share at about 10%.
Historically, the development of mobile networks in The Gambia has been influenced by the country's limited fixed-line infrastructure. This has led to a high mobile penetration rate, with most Gambians relying on mobile services for communication. The regulatory authority for the telecommunication industry is the Public Utilities Regulatory Agency (PURA), established in 2001. Despite the presence of four major operators, internet access remains a challenge due to high data costs and limited infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.
Currently, none of the network operators provide 5G services, with Africell and QCell focusing on expanding their 4G coverage nationwide. The Chinese company Huawei has installed all network cables for the four providers.
