Gabon's mobile network has undergone significant development since the country's independence. In 1999, the government liberalized the telecom market by awarding three mobile telephony licenses and two ISP licenses, establishing an independent regulatory authority. This move marked the beginning of a competitive mobile market in Gabon.

By 2007, the number of mobile subscriptions had increased, with 26,500 fixed lines in use and 39,100 lines by 2012. The country's mobile network has continued to expand, with 2.995 million mobile subscriptions as of 2022, representing a significant increase in mobile penetration. The regulatory framework, overseen by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP), has ensured fair competition among service providers and protected consumer rights.

In 2014, Gabon introduced 3G/4G licenses, further enhancing mobile broadband services. The deployment of over 1200 km of fiber optic through the Central African Backbone project has improved internet access and mobile data traffic. This infrastructure upgrade has enabled high-speed internet access, making it easier for citizens to complete transactions and access administrative services, as well as enhancing overall connectivity and economic development.
