Check device compatibilityChad's mobile network sector is characterized by rapid growth and investment. The country's mobile network development began with the entry of foreign-owned networks, primarily Bharti Airtel (formerly Zain) and Millicom (Tigo), which was later sold to Morocco Telecom in 2019. These networks have driven the expansion of mobile services, offering basic data services using GPRS, EDGE, 3G, and 4G technologies.
The national telecom and fixed-line operator, Sotel Tchad, operates the country's third mobile network. Despite these advancements, maintaining cellular networks in Chad is challenging due to harsh weather conditions and erratic electricity. The supply of handsets and tablets has not kept pace with growing demand, leading to a reliance on inexpensive imports from Asia and informal markets in France, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
In recent years, there has been significant investment in mobile networks, including the construction of a national data center by Huawei in 2020. This project aims to enhance web connectivity and digitize services through the expansion of 4G networks and fiber optic infrastructure. The mobile sector is dominated by a duopoly, with Airtel holding 47% of the market and Tigo holding the remaining 53%.
