The Central African Republic's mobile network has undergone significant development since the launch of its first Internet connection service by the Central African Telecommunications Company (SOCATEL) in 2000. This marked the beginning of mobile network expansion, with mobile operators obtaining "Global" licenses for "Mobile, Internet, and Images" services in 2008. The market for Internet access became more competitive with the popularization of mobile networks across the country.

As of 2019, approximately 5.4% of the population had Internet access, with most connections confined to Bangui. However, thanks to mobile networks, major cities in the country are now connected via satellite. Four mobile and one wired Internet providers operate in the CAR, offering connections with speeds ranging from 126 to 250 bits/sec for wireline connections and up to 128 Mbit/second for mobile networks. The country is also set to connect to fiber optic networks as part of the regional CAB project funded by the World Bank.

Young people aged 18-35 are the most connected via mobile phones, with no significant gender-based divide in Internet access rates. However, access to electricity remains a major obstacle to mobile network expansion, particularly in rural areas where people often rely on expensive generators to charge their phones.
