Check device compatibilityYemen's mobile network has undergone significant development since the early 2000s. In 2004, the Yemen Telecommunication Ministry launched Yemen Mobile, the first CDMA network in the region. This was followed by the introduction of GSM technology by various operators, including Yemeni Omani United (YOU), Sabafon, Yemen Mobile, and Y-Telecom. By 2008, these operators had expanded their coverage to about 60% of the population, although growth was hindered by internal security threats and poor consumer payment histories.
In 2005, TeleYemen announced plans to invest in the FALCON high-capacity loop cable system, aiming to improve Internet access and international call capabilities. This investment aimed to enhance broadband services and expand telecommunications infrastructure.
By 2011, the mobile network had grown, with the introduction of 3G services by Yemen Mobile and Sabafon. The market continued to expand, with the launch of 4G services by Adennet in July 2020, primarily to serve areas under government control and reduce dependence on Houthi-controlled networks.
Despite these advancements, Yemen's mobile network faces numerous challenges. The ongoing civil war has led to frequent disruptions, sabotage of telecommunication lines, and attacks on infrastructure. This has resulted in significant outages and limited access to mobile services, particularly in rural areas.
