Svalbard and Jan Mayen have a unique mobile network setup. Historically, Svalbard was one of the first places in Norway to test 4G technology, and now it is also home to the world's most northerly 5G pilot. Telenor launched this pilot in Longyearbyen in 2019 to test and learn about 5G technology in the Arctic climate. The pilot includes testing broadband via 5G and 5G on mobile handsets, with a focus on using the technology for drones, emergency networks, and 360-degree cameras. This initiative aims to enhance the resilience and efficiency of emergency services in the region.

Jan Mayen, on the other hand, has a limited mobile network presence. The island is primarily used for military and meteorological purposes, and it does not have a permanent population. The mobile network on Jan Mayen is mainly used for communication at the combined military and meteorological outpost.

In summary, Svalbard has been at the forefront of mobile network development in Norway, starting with 4G and now moving to 5G, while Jan Mayen's mobile network is more limited and focused on specific operational needs.
