Check device compatibilityNauru's mobile network landscape is characterized by limited but growing connectivity. The country's mobile network development began in the 1990s with the introduction of mobile cellular phones. By 1994, there were 450 mobile cellular phones in use, providing basic communication services to the population.
In 2011, the Director of Telecommunications (Regulatory) noted that only specific mobile number ranges were in use, including 556xxxx, 557xxxx, and 558xxxx. These numbers were used for mobile services, while landlines were not operational at that time.
As of 2021, Nauru had approximately 10,000 mobile cellular subscriptions, which accounted for about 80 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants. The country relies heavily on satellite services for internet and mobile connectivity, which can be unstable due to weather conditions and limited network coverage.
Despite these challenges, Nauru has made efforts to improve its telecommunications infrastructure, including the establishment of a government-owned radio station and television stations that broadcast programs from Australia and New Zealand. The country's internet service is provided by CenPacNet and Digicel Nauru, with the .nr country code domain being managed by CenPacNet. The government has also taken steps to increase transparency in its financial sector and has implemented reforms to address concerns about money laundering and terrorist financing.
