The Marshall Islands have a limited but evolving mobile network. Historically, the country's mobile network development has been marked by significant challenges due to its remote location and sparse population. In 1994, there were only 280 mobile cellular connections in the Marshall Islands, indicating a very low level of mobile penetration at that time.

In recent years, efforts have been made to improve connectivity. For instance, in 2010, the Majuro and Kwajalein Atolls were connected to the HANTRU-1 undersea communications cable, which provided high-speed bandwidth and improved internet services. This infrastructure upgrade has facilitated the expansion of mobile networks, although the country still lags behind in terms of mobile penetration.

As of early 2023, there were approximately 7,844 active cellular mobile connections in the Marshall Islands, which translates to about 18.8 percent of the total population. This indicates a gradual increase in mobile adoption, albeit from a very low base. The majority of these connections are likely concentrated in the urban areas of Majuro and Kwajalein, which serve as the primary hubs for employment and modern amenities.

Despite these advancements, the Marshall Islands continue to face challenges in expanding mobile coverage to the outer islands, where connectivity remains limited. Efforts to improve mobile connectivity are ongoing, with initiatives like the use of small-cell technology and satellite communications aimed at bridging the digital divide and enhancing connectivity across the country.
