Guyana's mobile network has undergone significant development over the years. Early telecommunications in Guyana were dominated by large foreign firms until the industry was nationalized in the 1970s. This led to a monopoly held by the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) for most services. However, in the 1990s, a shift towards privatization aimed to improve service quality and lower prices for consumers. The 2016 Telecommunications Act further aimed to establish universal access and improve the overall quality of services.

In recent years, Guyana has seen increased investment and competition in the telecom sector. The country only liberalized its telecom sector in 2020, opening it up to competition. This has led to the introduction of new mobile carriers and the expansion of existing ones. For instance, in February 2023, Guyana granted a license for a new mobile carrier called Green Gibraltar, which was planning to offer 5G services in seven of Guyana’s 10 regions. Additionally, the government has been committed to developing a robust telecommunications industry comparable to global standards, as highlighted by Prime Minister Mark Phillips during the launch of Samsung’s S24 smartphone by carrier Enet in January 2024.

Guyana has made notable strides in mobile penetration, with an estimated 880,000 mobile subscribers and a market penetration of 108% as of recent data. The country is also set to receive new telecom submarine cables, such as Digicel’s Deep Blue One system, which will enhance connectivity and support the growing demand for digital infrastructure, particularly in the energy sector driven by major oil and gas discoveries off the country’s coast.
