The French Southern Territories (TAAF) have a limited mobile network infrastructure. Historically, the development of mobile networks in the TAAF has been influenced by the remote and inhospitable nature of the territories. Initially, the primary means of communication were through satellite connections and radio communication systems. The first satellite Internet services were established in the 1990s, with Africa's first native TCP/IP high-speed satellite Internet services being launched in Uganda in 1995. These early services were crucial for connecting the TAAF to the global network.

In the early 2000s, mobile phone services began to expand, with the introduction of mobile Internet services. The first mobile Internet service, i-mode, was launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in 1999. This marked a significant milestone in the development of mobile Internet access. The growth of mobile phone services was initially a primarily Asian phenomenon, but it soon spread to other regions, including Africa and South America.

In the TAAF, mobile phone services are limited due to the sparse population and the lack of infrastructure. The main form of communication is through satellite connections and radio communication systems. The French Navy and other services patrol the zone to enforce fishing regulations and protect the territory's natural resources.

Today, mobile data traffic is a significant component of global communication, with total global mobile data traffic reaching 588 exabytes in 2020. Smartphones account for 95% of this traffic, with video accounting for 66% of the data type. The mobile network infrastructure in the TAAF continues to evolve, albeit at a slower pace due to its remote location and limited population.
