Eritrea's mobile network has a history marked by significant challenges and limited accessibility. The country was allegedly the last to adopt a mobile phone system, with its sole provider, EriTel, being tightly controlled by the government. This control has resulted in high connection fees, limited availability, and a requirement for a resident's permit to access the network. The network primarily operates on 2G, with some 3G coverage, but mobile data access is restricted, making internet use through WiFi the primary means of accessing online services. The government has been slow to liberalize the telecommunications sector, despite appeals from the World Bank, and has only recently started a program to extend 3G services to remote areas using solar power to support the electrical infrastructure.
