Comoros has experienced significant development in its mobile network over the years. Historically, the country was dominated by a single telecom operator, Comores Télécoms, which provided poor services at high prices. This led to limited mobile coverage, with only 40% of the population having access to mobile services and less than 1% having broadband internet by 2013.

In 2013, the World Bank Group supported the government in liberalizing the telecommunications sector. An international tender was held, and a second telecoms license was awarded to Telma Comores in 2015. This competition led to improved services and lower prices. By 2018, mobile broadband subscriptions increased to 58 per 100 inhabitants, and coverage expanded to provide services to over 60% of the population.

The introduction of Telma Comores brought high-quality 4G LTE services, which significantly improved mobile broadband penetration. In response to this competition, Comores Télécoms launched an even faster 4.5G network. The country is expected to achieve full broadband coverage by 2030.

Currently, Comoros has two competing operators: Telma Comores and Comores Télécoms. Despite these improvements, mobile broadband penetration remains below average compared to other Arab states and globally, primarily due to high prices and low affordability.
